Old Town Spotlight: Material as Medium Show at the Torpedo Factory
O
One of the most unique places to visit in Old Town Alexandria is the Torpedo Factory Art Center (known locally as simply “The Torpedo Factory”). Interestingly enough, the name is more true to life than you might expect. The factory-turned-collective-artist-studio was originally a munitions plant for many years until it was repurposed through the founding of the art center in 1974. Now it’s a hotspot for local events of all kinds including festivals and art shows and welcomes more than 500,000 visitors annually.
If you’re looking for something to do in the Old Town area this weekend, you won’t want to miss one of the Torpedo Factory’s most interesting recent exhibitions, Material as Medium held in the Target Gallery.
Don’t Miss Out; it’s the Last Weekend to Attend Material as Medium
Material as Medium is a playful nod to the future of textile work in the United States that also pays homage to traditional art movements such as surrealism, abstract expressionism, and minimalism amongst others. You’ll enjoy seeing familiar elements of modern life creatively reimagined using unexpected and even unconventional materials by artists from all over the country.
Though some events at the Torpedo Factory do have a cover charge, the Material to Medium show is not one of them. You can take family and friends to view all the interesting submissions, for free, anytime between 10 am and 6 pm Saturday or Sunday the 14th and 15th.
